Europe just crossed a line the oil lobby swore would never come. In the third quarter of 2026, battery-electric vehicles outsold gasoline and diesel cars combined across the EU — and not by a rounding error.
Figures from green transport group Transport & Environment (T&E) show the EU registered 492,930 gasoline cars and 162,610 diesel cars in Q3 2026, for a combined 655,540. Battery-electric vehicles? 710,580. That is roughly 55,000 more than both combustion fuels managed together.
And this was no one-quarter fluke. T&E's data shows EVs first pulled ahead of gasoline alone back in Q2 2026. Knocking diesel out of the equation took just one more quarter — and now the combined total is in the rearview mirror too.
Diesel, once the continent's darling, is the real casualty here: at 162,610 units it is now a rounding blip next to the EV wave. The "electric is niche" argument just lost its last piece of ammunition in Europe.
Editor's Note: Legacy makers can still argue about margins and charging anxiety all they want — the European buyer has already voted with the lease.
