GLOBAL LAUNCH: SAIC MG IM5/IM6 (CHINA’S IM L6/LS6) HITS UK MARKET FROM GBP£39,450

Published on

July 11, 2024 (London) – MG Motor UK debuts its new IM sub-brand with two Tesla rivals:

  • IM5 (sedan, UK version of IM L6): GBP £39,450 (USD $50,800 / RMB 385K)
  • IM6 (crossover, UK LS6): from GBP £47,995 (USD $61,800 / RMB 468K)

800V WARRIORS
Lightning charging: 10-80% in 17 mins (100kWh battery, 711km WLTP) – outperforms UK’s current 350kW max charging infrastructure
Performance variants:

  • IM5 “767hp” trim: 3.2s 0-100km/h, 801Nm torque
  • IM6 flagship matches Model Y Performance at 3.5s
Tax trick: Base IM5’s £39,450 price avoids UK’s >£40K luxury car surcharge

TECH SHOWCASE (VERY CHINESE)

  • 26.3-inch panoramic dash display + 10.5″ touchscreen (physical buttons deleted)
  • Rear-wheel steering: <10m turning circle (IM5)
  • “Rain Night” mode: Enhanced wet-weather driving aids
  • Standard auto-parking & panoramic sunroof

BATTERY OPTIONS

ModelBatteryRangePrice (GBP)
IM575kWh531km£39,450
IM5100kWh711km£44,995
IM6100kWh680km£47,995

711km range – enough to drive from London to Glasgow and back…with batteries only.

See, at £39,450, the IM5 costs exactly £550 less than the UK’s luxury tax threshold – because nothing says ‘premium EV’ like an accountant-approved pricing strategy.

Coming Soon?
The 900V semi-SOLID-state battery variant (400kW charging) remains unconfirmed for UK launch.

EDITOR’S NOTE

MG’s IM twins bring Chinese premium EV firepower to Europe – but can they out-charm Tesla? The MG’s century-old history in the UK, with 800V tech and tax-edge pricing, makes this a strong case.
