China has overtaken Japan as Australia's top car import source, with Chinese vehicle imports surging 83% year-on-year — ending Japan's 28-year reign at the top. In April 2026 alone, Australia imported nearly 36,000 Chinese passenger vehicles versus 29,000 from Japan. For the first four months of 2026, cumulative Chinese car imports have already exceeded 100,000 units.
Rising fuel prices are a key driver, pushing Australian consumers toward more economical NEV models — a segment where Chinese brands hold a clear edge on both price and range. The trend shows no signs of slowing.
